Pastor Jim McCarty
Pastor Jim and Shirley are both native Floridians. He grew up in Miami, Pompano Beach, and Brandon. Shirley was raised in Boca Raton, Okeechobee, and Brandon. They met each other at First Baptist Church Brandon, graduated from Brandon High School, but went their separate ways to college. Pastor Jim went to Stetson; Shirley to the University of Florida. He majored in communications; Shirley in Pharmacy. Pastor Jim went on to Seminary at Southwestern in Ft. Worth, Texas. Shirley graduated from UF and they were married the summer of 1980. God returned them to Gainesville, Florida where they served almost two decades and had their six children. They also served at First Baptist Leesburg and more recently in Lithia before coming to Port Charlotte in May of 2006. Pastor Jim received his doctorate degree in May 2010 from Southern Seminary in Louisville.
How large is the family you grew up in?
I have two sisters. My older sister Marijean lives in Franklin Tennessee and is married to the Christian artist Steve Green. My younger sister Patti lives in St. Louis with her husband Steve Hankey. I am close to both of them. Both of my parents are in their 80's and still reside in Brandon.
When and how did you come to know Christ?
I was eight years old in a Church service. I heard the gospel and received Christ at that time. My parents confirm I genuinely repented and received the Lord.
What was the first job you ever had?
I was a bag boy for Publix supermarket.
How did you get into ministry?
I began ministering in children's church and V.B.S. as a teen at First Baptist Church Brandon. As a college student I taught Sunday School to teens. In Seminary I led an inner city mission church.
What do you like best about your job?
People - I am a shepherd.

Family, tennis, friends.
Is there something about you that people would be surprised to learn?
With all that I have to do each day, my six children are always in the back of my mind - I love them so much and desire for each of them to fulfill their God-ordained destinies.
